There’s going to be a temptation to scrutinise his decision to bowl first. But make no mistake, there was enough help for the seamers in the first two sessions at least, under heavy cloud cover. Only that India’s two openers today were exceptional. It can’t be overstated how well Rohit and Rahul played, showing all the attributes needed to negotiate the testing conditions on offer. Soft hands, playing late, leaving well – the two of them made the pitch look a lot better than it was. They also exposed the depth of England’s attack, with Anderson not getting much support. They will need to continue this and surely they will go 1 up in the series. Till then, wait for Day 2
