OUT! Caught. Sandeep Lamichhane to Lloyd Pope. Leg spinner length ball, off stump on the front foot pushing, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to short extra cover, by Stoinis. Melbourne Stars have demolished Sydney Sixers by 94 runs at the MCG to secure fourth spot and a semi-final place. This was a must-win game for the Stars and they will have been worried when the runs were hard to come by in the first innings. Glenn Maxwell changed the momentum in the final four overs, blasting the ball to all parts of the ground to launch the hosts to a decent total. That energy continued when they came out to field as wickets tumbled in quick succession. The Sixers only needed to make 108 to ensure their semi-final against the Renegades took place at the MCG, but in the end they were toppled for their lowest ever BBL score. The two legspinners were fantastic, there was sharp catching and aggressive captaincy so the Stars will be riding high when they travel to Hobart on Thursday. The Sixers will be feeling pretty hollow after that, they will have to lift themselves for their semi-final on Friday at Marvel Stadium.

OUT! Run Out. Adam Zampa to Steve O'Keefe. Leg spinner short, off stump on the back foot pulling, to fine leg for 2 runs, fielded by Lamichhane, by Handscomb. No collapse is complete without a run out so this was always likely to happen. Lamichhane does well to cut this off and it should be an easy three runs, but Lyon has to dive to make his ground and his bat bounces up before crossing the crease.

OUT! Caught. Sandeep Lamichhane to Ben Dwarshuis. Leg spinner length ball, off stump on the front foot driving, outside edge to first slip, by Maxwell. Beautiful bowling, Maxwell accepts another catch at slip although this one was much easier than the first. Dwarshuis was playing for spin but this one skidded across him to kiss the edge. Things just get worse and worse for the men in magenta.

OUT! Caught. Ben Dwarshuis to Glenn Maxwell. Length ball, to leg on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to short extra cover, by Henriques. Glenn Maxwell's astonishing 82 has launched Melbourne Stars to a decent looking total of 6-168 at the MCG. The hosts were struggling through the middle overs as the Sixers spinners kept things tight, before their skipper exploded into life in the final four overs. He's given them a great chance of jumping into fourth spot and securing a semi-final place.

6
SIX! Ben Dwarshuis to Glenn Maxwell. Half volley, middle stump on the front foot driving, well timed in the air under control over long on for 6 runs. This is a sensational knock by the Stars skipper. He kept calm earlier and now he is reaping the rewards. The Sixers haven't bowled well to him at the death though it must be said. This was in the slot which is criminal at this stage.

6
SIX! Tom Curran to Glenn Maxwell. Full toss, middle stump on the front foot flick, well timed in the air under control over deep backward square leg for 6 runs. You can't bowl deliveries like that when Maxwell is in this sort of mood. Poor from Curran and Maxi ruthlessly punishes him.

OUT! Run Out. Nathan Lyon to Glenn Maxwell. Off break length ball, to leg on the front foot working, to mid on for 1 run, fielded by Abbott, by Lyon. Oh dear, disaster for the Stars as Bravo gets run out without facing a single delivery. It should have been an easy two but the West Indies legend slipped and lost his bat, so Lyon had ample time to remove the bails.

FOUR! Nathan Lyon to Glenn Maxwell. Off break back of a length, down leg side on the back foot pulling, well timed past deep mid wicket for 4 runs. After seeing Maxwell use his feet the previous ball, Lyon fires this one in flat. Maxwell was expecting it though so is able to rock back and swat this powerfully for four more. Lyon under pressure now.

OUT! Caught. Tom Curran to Nic Maddinson. Length ball, to leg on the front foot flick, in the air uncontrolled to deep square leg, by Abbott. Great riposte by Curran, Maddinson has to depart. He was looking to carry on the carnage with the third boundary in a row but hitting square at the MCG is always dangerous. Abbott makes the catch look simple to put a smile back on the Englishman's face.
15.5
4
FOUR! Tom Curran to Nic Maddinson. Slower ball half volley, middle stump on the front foot driving, well timed in the air under control past long off for 4 runs. Another one, this time Curran changes his pace but it's in the slot for Maddinson to hammer it down the ground.

FOUR! Tom Curran to Nic Maddinson. Half volley, off stump backing away driving, well timed in the air under control past deep extra cover for 4 runs. Curran misses his length by a fraction allowing Maddinson to smoke it over the top. The Stars need plenty more hitting like that.

OUT! Caught. Steve O'Keefe to Peter Handscomb. Stock length ball, outside off stump down the track driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to deep extra cover, by Vince. O'Keefe strikes, he's deserved this because it's been a really impressive spell by the wily spinner. OUT! Caught. Tom Curran to Marcus Stoinis. Slower length ball, outside off stump on the back foot pulling, top edge in the air uncontrolled to short third man, by Philippe. That's gone straight up, Philippe has a long time to position himself underneath it and eventually he pouches it. That's a massive wicket for the Sixers, Stoinis has been in great form all tournament. Curran's slower ball does the trick, he's taken plenty of wickets with that delivery this year.

Start of Melbourne Stars Innings. Welcome to coverage of Match 56 of BBL08, the Melbourne Stars against Sydney Sixers at the MCG. This is the last match of the league phase of the competition and the Stars are left with a very simple equation - a win today and they will get to go to Hobart to face the Hurricanes in a semi-final, whereas a loss and the Heat will get that honour instead. The pressure is off for the Sixers as they have already booked their semi-final spot and should be hosting the Renegades at the SCG, although if they get beaten by a huge margin this afternoon their net run rate could dip enough to change the location to Marvel Stadium. The last time these sides met Peter Handscomb blasted a quickfire 70 to sink the men in pink, as the Stars emerged victorious in the chase with more than five overs to spare.

OUT!

OUT! Caught. Daniel Worrall to James Vince. Length ball, outside off stump on the front foot driving, mis-timed in the air uncontrolled to mid off, by Bravo. Bravo didn't contribute with the bat today but he's already had an impact in the field. He gleefully accepts his second catch to send Vince on his way, leaving the Sixers in early trouble. Henriques strides out with plenty of work to be done.

FOUR! Jackson Bird to Daniel Hughes. Length ball, off stump on the front foot driving, well timed past deep extra cover for 4 runs. Maxwell played plenty of great shots earlier but this must be the shot of the match so far. Hughes just leans into a dreamy drive and it whistles to the rope. That wouldn't have looked out of place in a Test match.

Bird celebrates, this is a great comeback by him after disappearing to the fence first two balls. Philippe was looking to carry on attacking but he got in an awkward position on this occasion.
